2022 World Cup qualifiers: The pressure is on Ghana, says South Africa coach Hugo Broos

South Africa coach Hugo Broos insists Ghana are under more pressure to advance to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers play-offs than his side ahead of Sunday’s decider in Cape Coast.

The two teams are separated by three points in Group G with South Africa needing a draw to top the group and seal progression while any kind of win will be enough for Ghana to qualify.

The match is happening on November 14, coincidentally two years ago, Ghana beat South Africa 2-0 at the Cape Coast Stadium. A similar result tonight and Ghana would be through.

“I think for Ghana they have to be in the next round. They have nearly always been in World Cups (Ghana did not qualify for Russia 2018, but did make it to the three previous finals), they are a team with much experience and for them, it is a bigger problem if they are not in the next round. The pressure is on them,” Broos said.

South Africa and Ghana both missed out on the 2018 World Cup in Russia but since 2006 Black Stars has made more appearances at the global showpiece than Bafana.

Ghana qualified for three straight tournaments from 2006 to 2014 while South Africa appeared at the 2010 edition because they were the host.
